Giving hate no safe harbor

Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area extends out from the Oregon coast, one mile into the Pacific Ocean. Standing 93 feet tall the Yaquina Head lighthouse has been a bright beacon of the night guiding ships and their supplies along the west coast since the light was first lit in 1873.

As I walked the beach parallel to Oregon’s tallest lighthouse, I was inspired by its stand- alone, towering beauty and strength. Designed to emit light and serve as a navigational aid for maritime pilots, it also marks dangerous coastlines and can assist in aerial navigation.

This area is protected land with restricted access.

Spiritually, as believers in Christ, we are called to emit a light that is multi-faceted. This light serves as a moral compass. It’s called the light of Christ. When our eyes are on the cross and we draw close to Christ we invite and receive his love, power and light. When we restrict his access in our lives we risk running aground, attracting toxic relationships and indulging in unsafe activities. His Word is a lamp unto our feet and rigorous study of it can soften the hardest parts of our heart, confirm the spirits lead, and help us to identify and defeat the enemy.

I changed direction often whilst walking on the beach to avoid getting more than my feet wet. I couldn’t distinguish the deeper pools of water up ahead. After a few miles, I arrived at an interestingly shaped steep cliff and the Lord spoke to me about the condition of my heart. He showed me areas of my heart, hidden and protected, where I’d restricted his access. I lifted my eyes to see black hard smooth surfaces, and intimidating jagged rock edges. He showed me softer, smooth surfaces where his love and freedom had poured into my heart. Those areas had flowers, growth, abundant life and beauty. I bowed to his ongoing work of grace in my life. He assured me that he is still with me and I’m not alone. The God of the hills, the valleys and the mountains shared that the most challenging cliffs and mountains I will climb are the ones within. He’s still opening my heart and transforming the darkness into a unique class and characteristic of light fit for his purposes.

Friends, today I want to encourage you to open up to the power and light of the living God so you can stand firm for gospel values. His strength allows us to stand alone when its least popular. Ask yourself, what class of light do I emit or want to emit ? Do I play it safe in the harbors of life ? Am I open and willing to extend myself, way out, into unknown terrain for the sake of gospel values? Can I stand firm when the waves are pounding me, and the seas of life have lifted up their voice ?

Today, more than ever, we need the unique guiding light, vision and revelation of Christ.  Our internal shores are designed for outstanding beauty and growth. Our external shores are worth defending.
